Ade Bashorun & The Lagos Highlife Explosive Ade Bashorun: Making Nigerian music in Bohemian Soho by Val Wilmer, The Guardian 30 November 2002 The Nigerian percussionist Ade Bashorun, who has died aged 86, was a member of one of the most influential African musical groups to perform in Britain. He also belonged to the Soho bohemia of the 1950s, the African side of which was memorialised in Colin mcinness novel City Of Spades. Born into a middle-class Muslim family, he attended school in Lagos, then worked as a clerk in the local Barclays Bank. His musical interest was inspired by listening to an uncle play the drums for the samba ashiko a dance connected with the Brazilian emancipados of Lagos and the Keta people of eastern Ghana and he became known as a musician on joining Ayinde Bakare, the most prominent guitarist of his generation. Determined to travel, Bashorun worked his way up the west coast of Africa as a seaman. He spent nine months in Gambia with an elderly relative, a judge, and loaded groundnuts on riverboats, before joining a British-bound ship in Dakar. Arriving in Liverpool in 1946, he took one look at that war-torn city and moved to Cardiff, where he lodged in Bute Street with the family of Shirley Bassey. He worked as a stoker at a Caerphilly brick factory, but moved again after learning that a community of his Lagosian contemporaries was developing in Manchester. Vijay Anand was born in Gurdaspur, Punjab and was the youngest of the four Anand siblings, including producer and director Chetan Anand and Dev Anand, a very popular Bollywood actor. Though Vijay Anand has had a career as an actor, screenwriter, editor, and producer, he will primarily be remembered as a director. In 1957, he made his directorial debut with Nau Do Gyarah, which he shot in 40 days [2]. Some of his successful movies as director are Johny Mera Naam (1970), Jewel Thief (1967), Teesri Manzil (1966), Kala Bazar (1960), Ram Balram, Rajput. www.facebook.com Vasa Prihoda was a Czech violinist born on August 22,1900. His father, Alois Prihoda, was his first teacher and remained so for ten years. Afterward, Prihoda attended the Prague Conservatory, where he studied with Marak (who himself studied with Otakar Sevcik.) He graduated in 1912 and gave his first public performance playing Mozarts fourth violin concerto (D Major.) Most violinists choose Brahms, Mendelssohn, or Paganini for a debut, but not Prihoda. It has been said that Toscanini discovered him playing in a Café (Grande Italia) in Milan, Italy, on December 27, 1919. Prihoda is remembered for his prodigious technique (which included exceptionally clear articulation), his ease in playing Paganini showpieces. After the war, Prihoda was censured by the Czech government because he did not boycott any of the German-occupied territories during the war. Prihoda concertized extensively all over the world and made a number of recordings when the industry was in its infancy. Unfortunately, some of his recordings were not well-produced so the sound quality is poor. He played in the US many times and was greatly admired for his style, dazzling technique, and finesse. I'm so glad to be born, grown up and living in one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland... in the town of Luzern. Player - Player One (Mark Broom Remix) 2005 it all started in the summer of 89 ...mark went on holiday to tenerife and in the clubs they were spinning the now legendary acid house music. on his return to england broom went on a search for this music... found it... bought some turntables and the birth of his musical career was born. after a few years of playing at peoples parties mark decided to try his hand at making music. through a friend he was introduced to ed and andy from black dog productions. together they created brooms first musical ideas. these ideas went on to be released on general production records.the studio used for these first recordings was called uxb studios and was run by dave hill. after many visitsto uxb dave asked mark if he would be into making some tracks together and from that day their musical and later business partnership was born. In 1994 they started pure plastic recordings which has played host to many of marks musical productions ranging from the landmark "angie is a shoplifter" lp through to the recent "rave days" ep. mark has also recorded on many of the worlds best labels including a13, ifach, speaker attack, mosiac, dark house music, new electronica. as a dj mark has spun at some of the worlds best clubs ranging from belgiums fuse club to spains la real. as a remixer mark has had the pleasure to mix artists like eddie flashion fowlkes, ken ishi, ben sims,samuel l. session, and the advent to name but a few.
